The Event

Technology, skills, and the future of
work

The High Commission of South Africa in Singapore and IN Diplomacy hosted the Future of Work Colloquium, a webinar focused on the integration of technology in South Africa’s workforce. With over 40 participants, the discussion explored how digital innovation and artificial intelligence are reshaping job opportunities and skill requirements across the country. H.E. Madiepetsane Charlotte Lobe, High Commissioner of South Africa to Singapore, opened the colloquium by framing the moment as the arrival of Technology 5.0, emphasising adaptation and the empowerment of workers in the digital age.

The conversation moved across academia and industry collaboration, gender equality as a driver of economic growth, the ethics and regulation of AI, and the work still needed to close the digital divide.

We must embrace AI and ensure that our people and workers in different places are empowered to utilise the future.

The Discussion

Four themes that shaped the colloquium

From the classroom to the boardroom, the conversation traced how South Africa prepares its workforce for an AI-driven economy.

Academia and Industry, Together

Upskilling workers and building AI and technology skills into curricula, with the Tshwane University of Technology’s Institute for the Future of Work highlighted as a model for bridging academia and industry through innovation and the commercialisation of student ideas.

Gender Equality and the Orange Movement

Gender equality as a driver of economic growth in Africa, and the potential of women to lead sustainable, green development. The Orange Movement was introduced as a global initiative to mobilise $10 billion for women and gender equality by 2030, aligned with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Ethical AI and Regulation

The challenges South African entrepreneurs face in adapting to rapid global change, and the need for strong legislative frameworks to guide the ethical use of artificial intelligence.

Connectivity and the Digital Divide

A closing call to enhance connectivity and access to technology across South Africa, closing the digital divide and fostering lasting partnerships between businesses and educational institutions.
