In 1966, just one year after Singapore’s independence, Egypt became the first Arab nation to formally recognise the new sovereign state. The act was both diplomatic and symbolic extending Arab world legitimacy to a young Southeast Asian republic, and laying the foundation for what would become one of the longest-standing Arab-Singapore bilateral relationships.
